Helena Bonham Carter gave up higher education for a higher calling: turning on men of the world with her five-foot-three-inch pixie perfection as an actress. At seventeen, she made a splash debuting in the made-for-BBC movie A Pattern of Roses (1983). Her costume (and out-of-costume) performances continued with Lady Jane (1986), which debuted her pale skin.
